Multicriteria decision support in the evaluation of systems and services. Applications in information systems outsourcing and portfolio of projects.
Period: 2006 - 2010
This studies aspects of a methodological nature and issues of applications and modelling problems. The following topics are the object of analysis for applying multicriteria decision support methods in a service context: selecting contracts for outsourcing services in general; assessing maintenance, while involving the periodicity of preventive intervention and selecting outsourcing alternatives for maintenance; establishing priorities for Information Systems; establishing priorities for a portfolio of projects.
Management of competitiveness.
This project consists of developing studies and applications associated with the planning and management of information and decision systems so as to: Assess impacts of the competitiveness of processes; Assess and structure business processes; Multi-criteria analysis of alternative technologies; Assess impacts of competitiveness on implementing systems; and Making decisions on investments.
Quantitative methods for supporting the management of the demand and supply of energy.
Period: 2002 - 2004
This project sets out proposals for using mathematical methods to support decision making in selecting tools for rationalizing energy in the residential sector. This Objective will be achieved through three goals: - To support the decision maker in identifying alternative instruments for implementing potential energy savings, and in formulating criteria to evaluate the different instruments available. %u2013 To estimate energy consumption for end use in the residential sector (equipment) and its recent evolution. This will be an important criterion for selecting the alternative instruments. %u2013 To support the decision-maker in modelling the problem and in solutions found, especially the goals and the actions selected.
Modeling decision support in selecting instruments for energy rationalization in the residential sector.
Period: 2003 - 2004
The Objectives of this project are: to quantify the changes in the habits of the use and consumption of residential appliances as a result of the energy crisis; to analyze the consumer%u2019s preference structures taking into consideration the different socio-economic characteristics; to estimate the reduction of the consumption of electricity for end-use in the residential sector in the metropolitan area of Recife; to develop a model of decision support that represents consumer behaviour vis-à-vis possible alternatives for saving energy.
Multicriteria decision model for risk management in the production, transport and distribution of natural gas.
Period: 2003 - 2004
This project addresses the problem of failures in the system using a multicriteria model that will allow the prioritization of recommendations for the management of the risks of production, transport and distribution of natural gas, by making the relevant variables compatible and comparing them.

This project studies the development of models for prioritizing and selecting Research & Development (R&D) Projects. The models address the prioritization methodology which is contextualized in a planning process which visualises business results.
Planning information systems - methods of prioritization.
This project consists of the methodological structuring of planning an information system, developing planning, and designing a method and procedures for decision support in prioritizing systems from the strategic vision and from the engineering of processes of the business unit.
Process planning and managing projects with multi-criteria evaluation.

The Objective of the Project is to develop the design of a management system and multicriteria evaluation to support the planning and management of projects and to apply them in two different contexts: the construction of residential buildings and in the construction of energy transmission lines. The project allows technical and scientific knowledge of multicriteria decision support to be used in the management process which is relevant to the production sector of civil construction and the energy sector, thus contributing to improving the quality and competitiveness of the products. In addition to this procedural aspect, there is the difficulty of establishing standards of time and budgeting with credibility which is compatible with competitive management.
Process planning and managing projects with multi-criteria evaluation.

The project tackles the design of a management system and multicriteria evaluation to support the planning and management of enterprises in the construction of energy transmission lines. The planning and management of the works are developed by using a multicriteria decision model to assist decision makers in choosing the plan to be applied.
System decision support based on decision theory.
Period: 1997 - 1999
The project deals with the evolution of previous studies related to developing decision models based on Decision Theory. These decision models can be more easily used in practice if implemented within the paradigms of Decision Support Systems (DSS). In this case, the combination of the three basic elements (database, base of models and dialogue) and the basic premise of iterativity enable the user and the decision maker, to use the decision model more easily.

The project develops the earlier study on the contribution of Decision Theory and Multi-attribute Utility Theory within the decision-making process in Maintenance Engineering. Two specific problems are studied within the wide range of issues which concern managers and decision makers. For each problem, its own Decision Model is designed, taking into consideration the peculiarities of each case so as to address these issues. These two problems consist of: establishing optimal maintenance policies under a multicriteria vision; and the integrated study of contracting maintenance and dimensioning replacement parts.

The project consists of constructing and implementing a Multicriteria Model for dimensioning replacement parts; constructing a Decision Model for establishing and selecting requirements for maintenance contracts. The Objectives of this study are: to determine probabilistic models for the reliability and maintainability of systems; to analyse and formalise the a priori knowledge of specialists in relation to the reliability and maintainability of production systems; to develop Decision Models for strategies for monitoring the maintenance of the system; to develop probabilistic models so as to evaluate the performance of systems.
